Emily Porter gave birth to her twins prematurely due to a genetic condition. The boys, Artie and Jack, were relatively healthy, aside from their hearing. The boys were both born profoundly deaf, according to ABC News Australia. In a first-of-its-kind operation in Australia, doctors performed cochlear implant surgery on the boys on the same day. Emily wanted Artie and Jack to hear her voice together for the first time. Ear, nose, and throat surgeon Rithvik Reddy told ABC News it was a big surgery.

“It was a bit of an organizational feat, but it makes such a big difference for them and the family to try and get it all done on the same day to minimize not just inconvenience, but also maximize the gain of them going through their journey together,” he said.

The Boys Cochlear Implants Changed Everything

Emily and Ewan Porter cared for their sons post-surgery, and when the time came, they met with a team from the Shepherd Center to turn on the cochlear implants.

“It was kind of the pinnacle day in this huge lead up,” Emily Porter said.

“It’s really the start of the rest of their lives, it’s the beginning of the next chapter,” Ewan added.

The grateful mother admitted that watching her boys listen to her voice with their cochlear implants overwhelmed her.

“It was incredible and emotional … for them to turn their head to the sound of my voice and see their little eyes widen at the sound of that was just, it’s just mind-blowing,” Emily said.

Ewan Porter said that each morning, turning on the boys’ cochlear implants brings joy to the whole family, including their big brother, Tommy.

“They smile … you can tell that they’re understanding what you’re saying. You’re talking to them … it really is a gift and a miracle,” Ewan said.
