Mexico Bans Captive Marine Mammals in Entertainment

In a groundbreaking move, Mexico’s Congress unanimously approved a reform to the General Wildlife Law that bans all use of dolphins, whales, and other marine mammals in captive entertainment.

The law, which has already passed both chambers and awaits the president’s signature, immediately prohibits breeding, commercial shows, and therapy programs involving these species. Existing captive marine mammals must be relocated to sea pens or sanctuaries, where they will remain until natural death under stricter welfare standards  .

This legislation marks a major milestone in animal welfare, aligning Mexico with a growing list of nations leading marine mammal conservational efforts. The decision has been welcomed by conservationists and animal rights groups, who emphasize that captive dolphins and orcas often suffer from chronic stress and unnatural conditions.

Officials will now focus on enforcing the ban and transitioning animals to more suitable habitats, reflecting a meaningful shift from entertainment to compassionate stewardship of marine wildlife.
