Electric aircraft startups have been promising a lot for a long time. Two of them are now close enough to matter.

Battery-electric and hybrid planes with a range of up to 500 kilometers (310 miles) would cover a quarter of Europe’s existing flight routes, according to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). That includes some of the continent’s most popular short hops: London to Dublin, Athens to Santorini, Barcelona to Ibiza, Nice to Corsica, and Rome to Sardinia. Every one of those routes crosses water or connects an island. Rail isn’t coming for them, which is why electrifying them is a different kind of priority than cutting routes where a fast train already exists.

The planes closest to the runway

French startup Aura Aero is building a 19-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft with a range of up to 1,500 kilometers (930 miles), aiming for certification in late 2029. Antoine Toulemont, the company’s European affairs advisor, makes the case: “Being hybrid will help our aircraft go further, but it still cuts emissions by up to 80 percent. And it can easily use sustainable aviation fuel rather than conventional jet fuel.” The company puts the reduction in direct operating costs at 50 percent at current fuel prices.

Dutch aerospace company Elysian Aircraft, working with KLM, is developing a larger model: a 90-passenger battery-electric aircraft with a 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) range, aimed at commercial service by 2035.

The economic case is harder to ignore

The green argument for short-haul electrification has been made for years. The financial one is newer. Jet fuel prices are still volatile because of Middle East tensions, and airlines running short routes are already operating on thin margins. Carlos López de la Osa, aviation technical manager at the European Federation for Transport and Environment, puts it plainly: “Electric and hybrid flights are a core part of the solution to making short-haul travel more sustainable, and less dependent on imported jet fuel.”

In July 2026, the European Commission proposed expanding aviation decarbonization funding to cover electric aircraft development alongside sustainable aviation fuel and hydrogen-powered planes. Regulators, it seems, have stopped treating this as a distant possibility.

What the green case requires

Electric aircraft eliminate in-flight fuel burn. How green they actually are depends on what powers the grid charging them and on the emissions that go into making batteries and components. Anna Hughes, director of Flight Free UK, is direct about it: “Electric flight will be an essential part of a low-carbon world of travel. But this type of flight is only zero carbon when powered by renewables.”

That caveat carries most weight in places still running on fossil fuels. For the island and cross-water routes where electric planes are most likely to launch first, many of which already sit on cleaner grids, the math is closer to working than most passengers realize.
